it's leaking oil behind the front plate, so i got to pull off the timing gears to get the plate off. the gears have marks on them but i don't know how to line up the marks

Put them back the way they are, if you don't have to turn the motor over. Usually, they line up with each other. Isn't the shafts keyed? Good luck
